GENETICS II

This hands on approach to genetics gives students an opportunity to study the inheritance of multiple alleles, examine karyotypes, and study pedigrees. Students observe the antigen-antibody reaction for ABO blood groups using simulated blood. Then, they identify the blood types of four people and apply the concept of codominance to determine possible genotypes and phenotypes of future generations. Students learn how nondisjunction can cause autosomal and sex chromosome disorders during meiosis while studying karyotypes. They learn to construct pedigree charts and use them to show how genotypes of genetic traits may be followed through a number of generations. Then, students create pedigrees for tongue rolling and ability the ability of their family to taste bitter with PTC paper. Includes all materials for ABO blood typing and karyotyping, PTC paper, worksheets, data sheets, and complete answer keys. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four.

DNA MODEL KIT (WITH PAINT)

Students construct this DNA model from six different molecular pieces, collectively depicting sixteen nucleotide pairs worth of DNA (8 AT and 8 GC pairs). The base pairs and the sugar and phosphate units are each manufactured as single plastic units. Because there are only nine molecular parts per nucleotide pair, which snap together by means of a pop-it bead mechanism, the model can be easily assembled. The model may be disassembled and reassembled like a puzzle, enabling extended use. The model is unpainted and individual molecules may be painted by students either prior to or after assembly. Model with paint includes six paint colors, paint thinner, and six brushes. A laboratory exercise and problem set accompany the model. After completing the building exercise and problem set, students will have a better understanding
of the double helical structure and the function and properties of DNA. Contains instruction manual, 144 plastic DNA building pieces, rod, spacers, and wooden base. Building and painting project ideal for six students.

URINALYSIS

The analysis of urine is a valuable procedure for evaluating a persons health. Using simulated urine samples, students are introduced to biomedical urinalysis procedures similar to those utilized in medical laboratories to determine the general characteristics of urine, observe sediments found in urine, and test for glucose, albumin, pH, specific gravity, and lead. No real urine or human products are used in this kit. Required, but not included: a Bunsen burner, balance, microscope, lab glassware, urine hydrometers (optional), and a centrifuge (1500 rpm, optional). Designed for 24 students working in six groups of four.

NUCLEIC ACIDS KIT

This nucleic acids kit provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate differences between DNA and RNA in terms of chemical composition and internucleotide bonding. Experiments include: (1) reacting DNA, RNA, and nucleosides in the Bial?s test for pentoses and the Dische diphenylamine test for deoxyribose; (2) the acid and alkaline hydrolysis of DNA and RNA. Required, but not included: fume hood, concentrated hydrochloric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, and glacial acetic acid. Designed for 24 students working in six groups of four.

AIDS SIMUTEST KIT

Students become bio-technicians while using this AIDS test kit, running eight samples in a simulated ELISA to determine which patient(s) may have contracted the HIV virus. Kit includes simulated patient serums, conjugate, chromagen, and reusable pre-treated ELISA microtiter plates. The kit may be used many times; just add distilled water. The kit is totally safe for student use. It does not contain blood serum or infectious agents. Orbit Preview DNA Model

A great whole-class DNA project.

This detailed and large-scale 3d model helps pupils to understand the chemistry and structure of DNA.

Building the double helix model engages and educates students. Pupils work together to make up the subassemblies ? the Thymine-Adenine and Cytosine-Guanine base pairs, sugar rings and phosphate groups ? which are joined together to make an impressive display and teaching resource.

12 base pairs show more than one turn of the double helix and the major and minor grooves of the protein lysozyme. Each atom is shown and coloured bonds indicate covalent or hydrogen bonding.

The finished model is 85cm high and 40cm wide and can set on a suitable stand (eg 90cm laboratory stand) or hung from a hook.

The kit contains 750 atoms and 850 bonding straws from the Orbit molecular modelling system, a set of wooden plates for hanging the model plus assembly instructions and a worksheet examining the structure of DNA and process of transcription.

Part and fully assembled versions are also available. Please note the kit version comes with unpainted wooden plates and does not include a display stand and this can be purchased separately
