ACIDS AND BASES I KIT

Students are introduced to acids, bases, and the pH scale through lab experiments using indicator solutions and papers commonly used in acid base titrations. In the first experiment, students compare eight test substances using red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, phenolphthalein, methyl orange, bromothymol blue, and phenol red. Then they compare the pH of common substances using Universal indicator solution, Universal indicator paper, and wide range pH paper. Students are asked to compare and contrast the results of these methods. Students observe the relationship between pH, ion concentrations, and the strengths of acids and bases. Students may continue to investigate by testing additional substances with the indicators. Lab activities are written in easy-to-understand, step-by-step format, and include worksheets, assessment materials, and answer keys. Includes small bottles for setting up group stations, and all required chemicals and supplies except goggles, gloves, and distilled water. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four. Meets national standards for grades 7-12.

IONIC INTERACTION KIT

This kit provides an introduction to ionic interactions. It gives students exposure to a large number of reactions, allowing maximal observation for a limited amount of time and effort. Includes precipitate forming, gas forming, and non-ionized product forming reactions. The investigation may be extended to teach students a number of additional basic chemical principles: including writing ionic formulas for the products formed; writing ionic interaction equations; relating placement of elements in the periodic table to their reactivity; and developing solubility principles from empirical evidence. Ideal for high school chemistry or physical sciences courses. Follow-up activities are suggested at the end of the instruction manual. Designed for 24 students working in groups of four. Contains cadmium nitrate and lead nitrate. Grade level 9-12.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES KIT

Students test the chemical properties of seven different solutions by mixing them in each possible combination and observing their reactions. Evidence of chemical reactions observed include gas production, color changes, and formation of precipitates. After becoming familiar with the chemical properties of the solutions, students use this information to identify any of the four unknown solutions. Learn to test for chloride, nitrate, phosphate, mercury, magnesium, chromate, lead, and carbonate ions, which are indicators of water pollution.
